AGAR TUM SAATH HO… (The Ruffled Pages)

The winter vacations were arriving and this time I really wanted all of us to spend it together, especially you.I was further exhilarated knowing that your parents were going on a tour during the vacations,so you would not really be looking forward to returning home for the vacations. Thus a few days before the vacations,I started reminding everyone that we planned on spending it together, everyone agreed. However,a couple of days before the vacation commenced, all of us had assembled. That day, almost everyone backed out and decided to return home for spending the vacations. My heart sank and I felt despondent. As everyone agreed to return home, you were reluctant but then finally even you relented.I acquiesced in everyone’s decision. As we were walking back, you asked me my plans for New Years and I replied that I would have to make new ones now,in a melancholy tone and you replied with a “You never know” and winked at me.I went to my room and turned on my music player in the cell phone and started listening to “Agar Tum Saath Ho”.My best friend -who knew what I had for you -came to me,rebuked me and said, “You know if you would’ve confessed your feelings for him, you could have spent the New Year with him.I replied in negative  for I knew you weren’t interested in anything presently. The vacations were commencing from 23rd December and almost everyone was leaving by the night of 22nd December including you.I was supposed to go the next day.I still had not booked my tickets in the hope that you might cancel your plan in the crunch time. But as I went to see-off my friend at the exit gate,I learned from one of your friend that you had already left for the airport an hour ago.I was dismayed but I went back to my room.It was 10:10 P.M., I  opened the airlines site to book my ticket, when my phone rang and I saw your name flash.I picked up the call, “Hey have you booked your tickets yet?”,you asked.“No”, I replied.“Do you mind spending you New Year here with me?”,you asked.“Yaa,sure why not!”,I almost exclaimed and then you said that you had missed your flight and that you would rather stay here than waste your money on  another flight booking.I felt disappointed realizing that it wasn’t for me but then I was happy that I at least was getting to spend my New Year with you.On  New Year’s eve, being  broke,we decided to eat at a local fast food joint and then we bought wishing lanterns to light them at midnight. As you took out your wallet to pay for the lanterns,I noticed a piece of paper fly from your wallet and land on the ground which wasn’t noticed by you.As I picked up the paper,I saw it was a torn and unstamped boarding pass.I looked at it and saw the departure time as 11:25 P.M. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach but I decided to ignore them and slid that crumpled piece of paper in my handbag. At midnight we went to the park where everyone had convened for New Year celebration.I was savouring every moment spent with you.As the clock struck midnight,we lit the wishing lantern and lifted it towards the sky and suddenly,my phone slipped from my hands and fell on the grass starting up my music player and the song “Agar Tum Sath Ho” started playing…
